Home row finger chart
Every letter key in the color of the finger that types it, the home row outlined, and the bumps on F and J drawn in. Print it in color and put it beside the keyboard, and the fingers have a map. The colors are the ones Star Keys, our touch-typing course, uses, so the paper chart and the game agree.
Prints on Letter or A4. Print as many as you need, for home or class.
How to use it
- Put it beside the keyboard, not on it. Eyes on the chart and fingers on the keys is the habit to build.
- Start with the home row alone. Fingers rest on A S D F and J K L ;, and the pointer fingers find the bumps on F and J without looking.
- Learn one finger at a time: it reaches up or down from its home key and comes back. A pinky types Q A Z on the left, and P ; ' / on the right.
- Five minutes a day beats an hour on Saturday.
With the games
Home Row Hop (ages 5–8, free, no account) is a first taste of the home row, with a finger hint for every key. Star Keys (6–8, Family plan) is the ten-finger course these colors come from. For 8 to 12, Typing Dojo (Family plan) teaches touch typing in eight belts, and Turbo Type (free) races words per minute. Younger children start with the keyboard coloring page.
