Ages 8–12Turbo Type — a free learning game on TotType
Turbo Type turns typing practice into a race. Your child types a short, true fact, about octopuses, the sun, honey and more, and every right letter drives their car toward the finish line. Three rival cars, Zip, Nova and Dash, race at speeds built around your child's own recent typing, so races stay close: as your child gets faster, so do the rivals. At the line your child sees their place, their words per minute and their accuracy, the same numbers a typing test gives, and wins and records unlock new paint for the car.

How to play Turbo Type
Pick a paint for your car and press a key to start. After 3, 2, 1, GO, type the fact on the screen; your car moves with every right letter. A wrong key flashes red and the car waits until you type the right one, so accuracy counts as much as speed. Capitals and punctuation count on a real keyboard; on a tablet's on-screen keys, letters match in either case and punctuation is skipped. Finish to see your place, your words per minute and your accuracy, then race again.
What your child learns
- Typing speed, measured in words per minute, the way a typing test measures it
- Accuracy: a wrong key holds the car up, so careful typing wins races
- Capital letters and punctuation in real sentences
- Reading true facts about animals, space, food and the human body
Why it works at this age
From about eight, children can read faster than they type, so the keyboard becomes the bottleneck for schoolwork. Racing makes speed practice something they want to do again, and because the rivals adapt to each child's own speed, the race is close enough to keep them trying without turning into a wall.
Tips for parents
- Ask about accuracy before speed: 95% or better is the goal, and speed follows.
- Race the same day each week and watch the words per minute climb.
- Read the fact aloud together after a race; they are all true.
Frequently asked questions
What age is Turbo Type for?
Ages 8 to 12, from third grade through middle school. The facts get longer as your child's speed grows, and the rivals' pace follows your child's own typing, so a beginner and a fast typist both get a close race.
Is Turbo Type free?
Yes. Turbo Type is one of the free games, with no account needed. A free account saves each child's progress and puts their best speed on the leaderboard.
How is words per minute worked out?
Every five right characters count as one word, and the time runs from the first key to the last. Accuracy is the share of keys that were right. Those are the usual rules for a typing test.
Can my child cheat by mashing keys?
No. The car moves only on the right key, and every wrong key lowers the accuracy, so mashing is slower than careful typing.
