Home Row Hop is a gentle first step toward touch typing. A friendly frog sits on a lily pad, and every pad ahead of it shows one key from the home row, the middle row of letters where fingers rest. Press the key on the glowing pad (a friendly voice says which one) and the frog hops across the pond with a splash and a musical note. Every key is coloured by the finger that presses it, and the game starts with just F and J before adding a few new keys at a time.

How to play Home Row Hop
Rest your pointer fingers on F and J, the keys with the little bumps. Press the letter on the glowing lily pad, or tap the pad, and the frog hops onto it. A wrong key only makes the frog wobble, with no timer and no way to lose. Every tenth hop lands on a flower pad and sets off fireworks, and new keys join a few at a time: D and K, then S and L, then A, then G and H, before the whole row gets mixed up.

Why it works at this age
Between five and eight, children start using more than one finger, and the home row is where good keyboard habits begin. Nobody expects full touch typing at this age, since small hands rarely span the keys, so the game teaches only the map: which finger rests where. It starts with F and J alone, adds keys a few at a time, and turns every correct press into a hop, with no timer and nothing to lose.
Tips for parents
- Show your child the little bumps on F and J, then let them find those keys with their eyes closed.
- Praise the right finger more than a fast hop; slow and correct is the habit worth building.
- Stop after a flower or two. A few short hops most days beats one long session.
