Ages 3–4

Trace & Type pairs phonics with the very first typing. Your child hears a letter and its sound, sees a friendly word that starts with it, then presses that letter on the keyboard. It connects the shape of a letter, the sound it makes, and where it lives on the keys — three skills at once.

What your child learns

  • Letter sounds and beginning phonics
  • Linking letters to words that start with them
  • Letter-to-key location on the keyboard
  • Early typing and listening skills

How to play Trace & Type

Listen as the game says a letter and a word that begins with it — “B… ball”. Then press that letter on the keyboard, or tap it on the on-screen keyboard. Every correct press is praised, building confidence letter by letter.

Why it works at this age

Tracing a letter and then pressing that letter, in the same minute, is how the shape on the screen and the shape on the key become one thing in a child's mind. Hearing the letter's sound and a word that starts with it ties the whole thing to reading before reading has begun.

Tips for parents

Frequently asked questions

Is this a phonics game?

Yes. Trace & Type introduces letter sounds and the words they begin, which is the heart of early phonics, while building keyboard familiarity.

Can it be played on a tablet?

Yes — an on-screen keyboard lets children tap the right letter, so no physical keyboard is needed.
