Number Express

Every train car has 10 seats! Type how many, then press Enter. All aboard!

Number Express

Ages 4–7

Number Express is a toy train line where every car is a ten-frame: ten seats in two rows of five. Animal passengers hop on, a full car closes its doors with a ding and couples on with a clunk, and Captain Tusk, the walrus conductor, asks the questions. Typing 3 to fill a car that already holds 7 is making ten; 13 is one full car and three more passengers. The line runs from the Farm to the Beach, the Jungle and the City: 4 lines, 32 stations and 96 trips to ride them all once, then endless new trips.

How to play Number Express

Count the passengers as they board, then type how many and press Enter (on a tablet, tap the number keys and Go). When a car has empty seats, type how many more will fill it. To bring a number, add full cars with + Car (or the T key) and single passengers with + 1 (or the O key), then press Go. On the number line, type the stop where the train is waiting. A wrong answer plays out as a funny picture, like one passenger too many riding on the roof, and then there is one more try with extra help. Three trips make a station, and every station adds a decoration and stamps to your child’s ticket book.

What your child learns

Why it works at this age

Between four and seven, children move from counting one by one to seeing numbers as groups of ten. The ten-frame is the picture early-years teachers use for that step, and here every train car is one: seven seated and three empty seats is 7 + 3 = 10 at a glance, and 13 is one full car and three more. Wrong answers play out on the train instead of earning a red cross, so a mistake shows why it was wrong.

Tips for parents

What age is Number Express for?

Ages 4 to 7. The age a grown-up picks sets the starting line: 4 starts on the Farm (counting and making ten), 5 on the Beach (numbers to 20), 6 in the Jungle (tens and ones to 50) and 7 in the City (adding and taking away across ten, and the number line to 100). The help fades as a job gets easy and comes back when it gets hard.
