Word Fortress

Type a monster's word to knock it out before it reaches the castle

Word Fortress

Ages 8–12

In Word Fortress, monsters march on the castle and each one carries a word. Typing a word's first letter aims at that monster, every right letter shoots an arrow, and the whole word knocks it out. A monster that reaches the wall costs a heart, and five hearts lost means the fortress falls. Between waves, the coins your child's words earned buy spells, and a spell is bought by typing its name: freeze, fireball or repair. Waves grow longer, faster and wordier.

How to play Word Fortress

Type a monster's word to shoot it. The first letter picks the monster, the one nearest the wall when two share a letter; Esc lets go of a target. In battle, 1 freezes every monster for 4 seconds, 2 throws a fireball at the monster closest to the wall, and 3 mends a heart. After each wave, the armory opens: type freeze, fireball or repair to buy one, then press Enter for the next wave. A grown-up can set the speed to Gentle, Normal or Fast.

What your child learns

Why it works at this age

Typing under gentle time pressure trains the jump from spelling a word letter by letter to typing it as one quick movement, which is how fluent typists work. Choosing the most urgent target keeps attention on the screen, not the keys, and the armory's typed spells sneak in extra words between waves.

Tips for parents

Frequently asked questions

What age is Word Fortress for?

Ages 8 to 12. Words start at 3 and 4 letters and grow to 8, and the speed follows your child's age. A grown-up can choose Gentle, Normal or Fast in the Grown-ups corner.

Is it violent?

No. The monsters are friendly cartoon ghosts, aliens, robots and dragons, and a knocked-out monster simply pops and disappears.

Does it work on a tablet?

Yes. Every word uses only the letters a to z, which the on-screen keys type, and the spells are on the number keys and as buttons. A real keyboard is faster.

Is it on a paid plan?

Word Fortress is in the Family Plus plan. Anyone can defend the first waves free in the demo.
