A full-screen keyboard playground where every key your toddler presses does something good — a giant letter, a number, a hand-drawn friend — and none of it types into anything real. Free, no account. Below: exactly what a press does, what the fullscreen lock catches in which browsers and what it cannot catch anywhere, and how you get out.

What actually happens when a toddler presses a key

Open the keyboard playground, press Start, and the page fills the screen. From then on the keyboard has exactly two behaviours:

  • Letters and digits — A through Z and 0 through 9 burst onto the screen as a giant version of that character, in a colour picked from the current palette.
  • Everything else— Space, Tab, Enter, arrows, punctuation, function keys — brings up one of the site’s 18 hand-drawn characters. The mapping is fixed, so the same key always summons the same character. This is the part toddlers notice first: the semicolon is theirs, and it always brings the same friend.

There is no target to hit, no letter being asked for, and no losing. Every twenty-five presses sets off confetti and a chord; every fifty presses triggers a bigger surprise. That is the whole mechanic, and it is deliberately shallow — a two-year-old is not learning the alphabet here, they are learning that they can operate the machine the grown-ups use.

The lock, the exit and the counter — the toddler part

The browser-by-browser detail is written up once, on the kids typing games page, and it is identical for a toddler: the fullscreen keyboard lock exists only in Chrome and Edge, no site in any browser can block PrintScreen, Cmd+Q or the Windows key, the exit is a three-second hold, and the playground sends a count of presses but never which keys. The FAQ at the foot of this page repeats each point in full. What is different when the player is two:

  • The exit is sized for your hand, not theirs. Holding Esc down for a full three seconds (on a touchscreen, three fingers held for three seconds) is deliberately hard for small hands and easy for yours, and a progress ring shows the hold registering. It releases the lock, stops the music and returns you to the start screen with the tab still open on TotType — one press from starting again, which is usually what a toddler wants about four seconds later.
  • On a tablet, a tap is a random draw.Tapping anywhere on the screen gives a random letter, digit, hand-drawn character or emoji, so a tablet toddler sees the same variety a keyboard toddler sees — but a tap cannot “press” a chosen letter. If you want a specific character to appear, use the on-screen keyboard keys or a physical keyboard.
  • Nothing checks for hardware. The on-screen keyboard opens because the device reports a touch screen, not because we detected a keyboard attached to it. Nothing on the site checks for attached hardware.

What it costs, and what needs an account

We changed this recently, so ignore any older description you may have read elsewhere on the site or the web. As it stands today:

  • The keyboard playground is free with no account. Open the home page and play. No card, no email, no sign-up.
  • Everything else needs a parent account — the free-tier learning games included. Making one costs nothing and needs no card.
  • Family, $4.99/month and Family Plus, $9.99/month unlock the rest of the catalogue. The fine print is on the parents page.

So if you came here to hand a toddler a keyboard and nothing else, you are done — the playground is the free part and it needs nothing from you.

The five games tagged for ones and twos

When to move on from the playground, and what a first session should look like before then, is the subject of how to introduce a toddler to the keyboard. What that post does not list is the exact age tag, mechanic and price of each next step, so here they are. These five are the learning games tagged for ones and twos; all five are voice-narrated, and unlike the playground each needs a free parent account (no card):

  • Counting Garden (ages 1–3) — one tap plants one flower, counted aloud to ten.
  • Shape Tap (ages 1–3) — shapes, named as they are tapped.
  • Animal Sounds(ages 1–4) — an animal’s name, then its real noise.
  • Color Splash (ages 1–3) — the game names a colour, your child taps the matching one from a few big choices, and the screen floods with it. Unlike the three above, this one asks for an answer.
  • Bubble Pop Letters (ages 2–5) — letter bubbles drift up the screen, and popping one takes either a tap on any bubble or a press of the letter printed on it. No letter is called out for your child to find, so there is nothing to get wrong.

Past these five, every one of the 20 learning games on the games hub carries an age tag, so the next rung is easy to find when the time comes. Much later — well past toddlerhood — the arcade holds 30 original games; playing them needs a free account with a verified email address.

What happens when my toddler presses a key?

Letters A–Z and digits 0–9 appear as a giant glyph of that character. Every other key — Space, Tab, Enter, arrows, symbols, function keys — brings up one of 18 hand-drawn characters, and each key always summons the same character, so a toddler learns that each key is its own thing. Nothing can be typed into anything, and there is no wrong key.

Does the keyboard playground need an account?

No. The keyboard playground on the TotType home page is the only thing here that opens with no account and no card. Every other game here, the free-tier learning games included, needs a parent account — free, no card. Paid plans: Family, $4.99 a month; Family Plus, $9.99 a month.

Can my toddler close the tab or open something else?

That depends on the browser, and we would rather say so than promise more than we deliver. In fullscreen on Chrome or Edge (Chromium), the Keyboard Lock API routes reserved shortcuts like Ctrl+W, F11, Ctrl+T and Esc to the page instead of the browser, so a fist on the keyboard does not close the tab. Safari and Firefox have no such lock, so those shortcuts still reach the browser. And keys the operating system takes for itself — Cmd+Q on a Mac, PrintScreen, the Windows key — never reach a web page in any browser, so nothing here can block them. A good fence, then, not a locked room.

How does a parent get out?

On a desktop, hold the Esc key down for a full three seconds. On a touchscreen, rest three fingers on the glass and keep them there for three seconds. A progress ring shows the hold registering. That leaves fullscreen, releases the keyboard lock and returns you to the playground’s own start screen; the tab is still open on TotType — it does not close.

My toddler uses a tablet with no keyboard. Does it still work?

Yes. A touch device gets an on-screen keyboard, and tapping anywhere on the screen also produces a burst. One thing to be clear about: a tap is random, not a specific key. Roughly speaking a tap gives a random letter, a random digit, a random character or a random emoji, so a tablet toddler sees the same variety a keyboard toddler sees — but a tap does not reproduce any particular key.

Is anything about my child sent to your servers?

The playground counts how many keys were pressed and sends that count, which is what drives the all-time counter on the home page. It never sends which keys were pressed — there is no record of the sequence your child typed. If you make a parent account, that count is what fills in the progress view.

Is there any way for a toddler to lose?

Not in the playground. There is no score to miss, no timer, no fail sound, and no wrong key — every press does something pleasant. That matters at this age, because the lesson being learned is simply that pressing things makes things happen.
